Himachal Pradesh government collaborates with Premier Institutions to study landslides

The Himachal Pradesh government is taking a proactive approach to understand the reasons behind the devastating landslides in the state. To achieve this, they are enlisting the expertise of four premier institutions, with the goal of identifying the factors leading to landslides and recommending preventive measures.

Expert collaboration

The government has initiated the process of engaging experts from esteemed institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee, IIT-Mandi, National Institute of Technology-Hamirpur, and the Central University of Himachal Pradesh-Dharamshala. These experts will carry out comprehensive studies to unravel the causes behind landslides and develop strategies to mitigate future disasters.

Comprehensive studies

The teams of experts will conduct various studies, including geophysical surveys and soil testing, to gain a deep understanding of the landslide phenomenon. By examining geological and environmental factors, they aim to pinpoint the triggers of landslides and propose effective solutions.

Impact of landslides

During the current monsoon season, Himachal Pradesh experienced a significant number of landslides that severely affected districts like Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra. These landslides not only caused extensive damage to the state's road infrastructure but also tragically claimed lives. The state recorded a total of 163 landslide incidents this monsoon season, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue.

Understanding landslide causes

According to data from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a total of 163 landslide incidents during this monsoon season. These incidents have resulted in the unfortunate loss of over 110 lives, with nine individuals still missing. Shimla, Mandi, Solan, and Kullu reported a significant number of casualties, underscoring the urgency of understanding and mitigating landslide risks in the state.
